There are various ways that individuals may become a United States citizen. In addition to the naturalization process, which is open to lawful permanent residents (i.e. green card holders), individuals may acquire United States citizenship through their parents or by birth. These avenues to citizenship are enshrined primarily in the United States Constitution.
